BodyWorks
Portsmouth, VA
Designer: SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership
Bodyworks at the Children’s Museum of Virginia is a vibrant, kid-focused educational exhibit designed to encourage physical activity while teaching children how their bodies respond to exercise. Spanning 650 square feet along the museum’s ‘Main Street,’ the space was re-envisioned by Skolnick Architecture & Design Partnership and fabricated by Ravenswood Studio.
Addressing the challenge of high-intensity play, the updated exhibit includes seven interactive elements, meticulously prototyped and engineered to withstand the rigors of children’s play. Highlights include a life-size wheel to run in and an articulating skeleton that mirrors the motions of riding a bike – showcasing Ravenswood’s innovative approach to interactive development. The exhibition also offers activities like a balance beam and hang time test, all aimed at promoting the importance of exercise while exploring key bodily systems such as the heart and circulatory, skeletal, and muscular systems.
