As a part of a city-wide update to all Spokane, Washington libraries, Ravenswood Studio was hired to fabricate educational playspaces for six different branches. Each library playspace is regionally themed, and native animals, landscape, and legends connect them all. Ravenswood Studio created custom-printed illustrations and cutouts, several wood platform climbers, and even a Sasquatch Hut Reading Nook for children to enjoy their favorite books.
The fabrication techniques utilized for this project showcase the natural beauty of birch, accenting its character with vibrant water-based dyes. Adjacent color-matched, direct-to-substrate printing with white spot layering showcase the playspaces’ characters and 2D design. A combination of technical scenographic sculpting and playful representational design bring bark, soil, and rock textures to life for kids to safely explore and enjoy.
